Technology's Impact on Communication

Introduction:

In the following presentation we will be discussing Technology's Impact on Communication based on the topics as described and how it has changed communication or helped it to evolve overtime with its implications in our day-to-day interactions, etc.

Mini Lesson 1:

Changes in Interpersonal Communication

Key Points:

  • Technology may enhance communication skills:

    • Some theorists are in favor that technology-aided communication may improve communication skills by allowing a safe environment to practice sending and receiving nonverbal cues and allowing that feedback in regards to the accuracy of perceptions. Tech interactions may facilitate face-to-face interactions.

  • Liberated Relationship Perspective:

    • Individuals who normally do not engage in face-to-face interactions may engage in technology-based interactions. Some of these reasons are individuals who do not engage in interactions, being shy, social anxiety, or geographical constraints.

  • Technology Use May Hinder Communication Skills:

    • Spending time communicating via tech may result in less face-to-face interactions and as a result less face-to-face interactions and less practice decoding nonverbal information as a whole. It is in this, that the type of communication skills learned or practiced in technology-mediated communication are not equivalent to or may even hinder skills required in face-to-face interactions, such as those non-verbal’s.

  • Reduction Hypothesis:

    • In the early 1990s, it was theorized that the internet had detrimental impacts on adolescent well-being and social connectedness. It was assumed that online relationships would de-motivate in-person ones.
